Gombe workers seek governor’s intervention over unpaid October salaries

Gombe State workers are seeking Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s intervention regarding their unpaid October salaries. The delay in salary payments has caused uncertainty among workers, who are urging the governor to address the issue promptly.

Confirming this to the PUNCH correspondent, Sambo Dahiru, a local government worker lamented the hardship many of them are currently facing, worsened by the non-payment of salaries.

The PUNCH correspondent reports that their counterparts in the state civil service received their pay on November 1.

Dahiru said, “We are yet to receive our salary, let alone a reflection of the consequential adjustment to the minimum wage. We are suffering; you know how expensive life has become, and it is even harder when money is not forthcoming, let alone having no funds for sustenance”.

Naomi Musa, another local government employee, called on the state governor to intervene: “I don’t know what the issue may be, whether it is due to direct funding from the Federal Government or the Central Bank of Nigeria that is causing the delay. I urge the governor to intervene and ensure these challenges are resolved”.

When contacted, Gombe State’s Commissioner for Finance, Gambo Magaji, assured that the issue would be resolved, stating that workers would receive their payments soon.

The Gombe State Government, under Governor Yahaya’s leadership, has previously demonstrated commitment to workers’ welfare. Notably, the governor has a background in finance, having served as Commissioner of Finance and Economic Development from 2003 to 2010. However, the current salary delay has raised concerns.

Similar issues have arisen in other states, such as Abia, where workers have gone unpaid for seven months due to a verification exercise. In contrast, Ekiti State has invested significantly in salary payments, with Governor Oyebanji disclosing that over N31 billion has been injected into the state’s economy as salary, pension, and gratuity since October 2022.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has also emphasized the importance of timely salary payments, highlighting the negative impact of delays on workers’ livelihoods.
