What’s the hardest decision you’ve ever had to make? Why?
When my mother told me that I had to choose between her and my sister. My sister had a biracial daughter. My mom wanted my sister to put the baby up for adoption. My sister wanted to keep the child, despite my parents’ objections.
Mom demanded that I use my influence on my sister to change her mind.
I talked to my sister for a long time. I don’t think we’d ever had such a deep, serious conversation. She was seven years older. She was a source of unconditional love to me; Mom’s was much more conditional.
Afterward, I returned to Mom. I told her that I had thought carefully and that my sister and niece had my support.
Mom and Dad didn’t throw me out or cease supporting me through college, but my decision left a gulf that never healed.
