Boat Mishap: Eight persons feared dead, over 20 missing in Delta
A devastating boat mishap has occurred in Delta State, leaving eight persons feared dead and over 20 others missing. The incident happened on Friday along the Escravos River in Warri South-West Council Area of Delta State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, DAILY POST report.
The victims on a speedboat at a very high speed were said to be returning from a burial ceremony when they had a collision with a big log in the creeks and in the process the boat capsized.
The victims who did not know how to swim and were without live vests drowned and went missing as soon as the incident occurred.
It took several hours before the body of a one-year-old was found floating along the creeks.
At the time of this report, passengers who ply the route were seen demanding live vests from boat riders before embarking on their journeys as they discussed the deaths of the victims.
According to eyewitnesses, the boat mishap occurred due to a downpour that caused turbulent waves on the river. The boat, which was traveling from the Escravos axis to Warri, collided with another boat coming from the opposite direction, resulting in the capsizing of both vessels.
The driver of the boat that took off from the Rex Water Front Jetty at the Ugbuwangue community survived the mishap and is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Warri. However, the number of persons on board both boats could not be ascertained, as it is not the practice amongst boat owners in the area to maintain passenger manifests.
The incident has sparked widespread concern and outrage, with many calling for improved safety measures on the state’s waterways. The Delta State government has been urged to take immediate action to prevent such incidents in the future.
